Garrison Church Potsdam – Baroque style meets modern lighting design

Once the tallest building in Potsdam and a masterpiece of North German Baroque, the Garrison Church was badly damaged by an air raid in 1945 and later blown up on behalf of the GDR regime. More than 70 years later, the reconstructed church tower celebrated its ceremonial resurrection on August 23, 2024.

Externally in the classic baroque style, the interior surprises with a modern and contemporary concept. The architecture of the room relies on a clear, minimalist design in which the lighting is subtle but impressive. Above the cassette-like wall, NauticProfil luminaires with 15° lenses are installed, the light of which shines specifically upwards onto the walls and into the high, slightly vaulted ceilings. The 48 meter long LED light line, which was fed in once at both ends, reinforces the vertical dynamics of the room with the graceful grazing light and underlines its harmonious proportions. This intelligent combination of lighting and architectural design creates a friendly and inviting atmosphere in which the geometric severity of the coffered wall blends harmoniously with the organic design language of the ceilings.

During the reconstruction, a new, custom-made ceiling light was designed specifically for the light dome, which optically picks up on the square design language of the cassette wall. It consists of four area lights, which are complemented by a surrounding frame light. The 3000 K warm white light has excellent color rendering with a CRI value greater than 93. This combination ensures uniform and lifelike general lighting that bathes the room in a soft, pleasant light.
A particularly technical sophistication is the centrally positioned REEL TECH lift, which was specially integrated into the ceiling light. With this technology, various objects can be flexibly pulled below the center of the lamp at any height, giving the room design additional versatility and functionality.
