Vibrant spaces: Light, design and community in the “Three Courtyards”

In the heart of Berlin, nestled between Potsdamer Platz, Tiergarten, and Gleisdreieck Park, lies the charming Lützowviertel district. Here, the "Drei Höfe" (Three Courtyards) have been created – an innovative mixed-use building that offers a modern interpretation of the 19th-century Berlin "backyard" architecture tradition. Designed by the renowned architects Tchoban Voss, it is a successful blend of historical charm and contemporary design. Living, working, and commerce are harmoniously integrated, creating a vibrant atmosphere intended to enrich Berlin's urban life. Three uniquely designed, landscaped courtyards provide the ideal setting for both social gatherings and tranquil oases amidst the city.

When lighting the courtyards, emphasis was placed on creating a pleasant and inviting atmosphere in the evenings, one that blends harmoniously into the sophisticated residential concept. Various light fixtures set accents and highlight the architecture without dazzling or disturbing the residents.

To meet individual requirements, custom-made pendant luminaires based on the NauticProfil® system were installed in the passageways. This system is ideal for supplying long run lengths with a single power feed. While in other areas of the building, linear lighting was integrated directly into the ceiling, the structural conditions here necessitated a different solution. Pendant luminaires offer the necessary flexibility while ensuring precise and targeted light distribution. Despite their impressive size of up to 3 by 10 meters, the rectangular luminaires appear almost weightless thanks to the minimal number of suspension points. This allows them to blend harmoniously into the overall architectural concept and emphasize the spatial effect of the courtyards.
