The basic idea of the new school campus “An der Dällt” in the municipality of Schuttrange in Munsbach is to network the areas of school, sports and culture with public life in the community.
The individual buildings are grouped around a generously sized public square, which forms the heart of the campus and connects the school area with the public space. It serves as a meeting place, a gathering spot, and a central hub for all generations in the community. The architectural team of a+a Bertrand Schmit and iPlan by Marc Gubbini Architectes won first prize for their design in an international competition and were commissioned to carry out the construction.
Art installations underscore and complement the architectural concept. The glass elevator in the cultural center was artistically transformed by local artist Stephanie Loewenstein under the title "at times." The projection of distorted architectural photography onto the glass of the elevator shaft reveals the layering of structures in interplay with light. The varying reflections on the moving elevator and the changing colored lighting abstract light, space, and time.
The evening accent lighting of the buildings, which highlights their form, also follows an artistic concept by Flashaar Ingenieure GmbH from Bingen am Rhein. Various lighting scenarios are programmed and can showcase the campus in a variety of ways, depending on the occasion or event. The benches, specially designed for the square, serve the same purpose; they rest simply on a slender, side-mounted base. Integrated lights cast long, colored beams of light across the square in the evening.
Sustainable architecture with an efficient, low-energy concept was a given for the Climate Alliance municipality of Schuttrange. This concept, along with other innovative approaches, was supported by the Ministry of the Environment with public funds.
The primary energy demand of the new school buildings is 40% lower than that of comparable conventional buildings. Heat loss is minimized through the optimization of the building envelope and the use of intelligent technologies and high-quality materials (e.g., for glazing and thermal insulation).
The exemplary management of resources and the intelligent use of innovative technologies thus make an active contribution to global environmental protection and to saving operating costs for the municipality of Schuttrange.
