Potsdam Garrison Church – Baroque style meets modern lighting design

Once the tallest building in Potsdam and a masterpiece of North German Baroque architecture, the Garrison Church was severely damaged by an air raid in 1945 and later demolished on the orders of the GDR regime. More than 70 years later, the reconstructed church tower celebrated its festive resurrection on August 23, 2024.

While its exterior is in classic Baroque style, the interior surprises with a modern and contemporary concept. The room's architecture emphasizes a clean, minimalist design, allowing the lighting to play a subtle yet striking role. NauticProfil luminaires with 15° lenses are installed above the coffered wall, directing their light upwards onto the walls and into the high, gently vaulted ceilings. The 48-meter-long LED light line, fed at both ends, enhances the room's vertical dynamism with its graceful grazing light and underscores its harmonious proportions. This intelligent combination of lighting design and architectural elements creates a welcoming and inviting atmosphere, where the geometric rigor of the coffered wall blends harmoniously with the organic forms of the ceilings.

A new, custom-made ceiling light was designed specifically for the illuminated dome during the reconstruction, visually echoing the square design of the coffered wall. It consists of four surface-mounted lights complemented by a surrounding frame light. The 3000 K warm white light boasts excellent color rendering with a CRI greater than 93. This combination ensures even and natural-looking ambient lighting, bathing the room in a soft, pleasant glow.
A particularly ingenious technical feature is the centrally positioned REEL TECH lift, which was integrated into the ceiling light. This technology allows various objects to be flexibly raised to any desired height beneath the center of the light, adding versatility and functionality to the room's design.
