In the heart of Berlin, a palace once again stands: the reconstructed City Palace. Behind the rebuilt Baroque facades lies the Humboldt Forum, a modern universal museum that invites visitors to discover the cultures of the world. Together with the neighboring Museum Island, it forms one of the largest contiguous museum complexes in Europe.
From September 23, 2021, the first exhibitions of the collections of the Ethnological Museum and the Museum of Asian Art of the National Museums in Berlin will be on display – illuminated by FLASHAAR .
In total, over 1.1 km of FLASHAAR the collections as well as other areas of the palace. The LED lines enhance the architecture with their lighting effect without drawing attention to themselves. The lighting concept for the Humboldt Forum was primarily developed by the renowned Berlin-based lighting design firm Lichtvision Design GmbH.
In the impressive domed hall of the Asian Museum, 70 meters of linear lighting accentuate the room's grandeur. Integrated into the surrounding cove, NauticProfil® luminaires illuminate the ceiling with neutral white light, creating a pleasantly diffused ambient glow. The enormous white dome serves as a projection surface. Beneath it, visitors can find the centuries-old "Cave of the Sixteen Swordbearers" from Kizil, one of the major highlights of the exhibition area.
Intangible cultural heritage is presented in a specially created, highly technological space – the listening room . The exhibition at the Ethnological Museum explores the music and sound of numerous cultures, offering visitors the opportunity to experience the world through their ears. Textile walls backlit with FLASHAAR light lines provide a soft backdrop.
In the Oceania exhibition of the Ethnological Museum (boat cube), ten special lights illuminate the coral display case , creating a unique underwater effect. The exhibition addresses coral bleaching and thus coral death, as well as climate change.
in the castle cellars . An illuminated walkway guides visitors through the exhibition in the only remaining section of the Berlin Palace. Over 220 meters of NauticProfil® lights have been installed beneath the walkway, illuminating it from the dark ground. This allows visually impaired people to walk safely, provides orientation and security, and creates a floating effect.
In the sculpture hall of the Museum of Byzantine Art, the original sandstone figures from the castle facades can be viewed up close. Here, too, the lighting designers aimed to highlight the grandeur of the room and its exhibits. The FLASHAAR luminaires, integrated into the cove, provide a soft ambient light. This is complemented by spotlights with directional light that illuminates the sculptures.
Large-format cove lighting, also fitted with NauticProfil® luminaires, defines the appearance of the Humboldt Academy and thus contributes to its distinctive character. The academy is a training center where flexible room usage was a key consideration in its design. The academy's main focus is on temporary exhibitions and permanent exhibitions on the history of the site.
