The Theresianum in Mainz is a state-recognized all-day secondary school that has been one of the European Schools of Rhineland-Palatinate since 2019. The expansion and renovation project at the church-run school took almost three years and has brought its fire safety and building technology up to the latest standards. By switching to LED lighting, the school not only saves on energy costs but also reduces the costs of replacement and maintenance.
The lighting designers at FLASHAAR Ingenieure use light to highlight and showcase the unique architecture of the high school. The aim is to create a noticeable effect from the light, while the light fixtures themselves remain simple and unobtrusive. The designers employ different light colors to suit the various uses of the rooms. The classrooms are illuminated with neutral white light, while the central area, library, and cafeteria welcome visitors with warm white light.
The general lighting in the Pedagogical Center is provided by surface-mounted spotlights with varying wattages and beam angles. LED light lines from FLASHAAR illuminate the perforated brickwork in the rear corridor.
In the cafeteria, the luminaires primarily feature cylindrical shapes, complementing each other in different sizes and mounting configurations. Here, too, linear light distribution is achieved using FLASHAAR NauticProfil® luminaires as wallwashing.
The upper floors, constructed using a split-level design, feature open-plan workspaces. The required 500 lux is achieved by the lighting designers through downlights and surface-mounted spotlights from the upper floors. As already implemented in the Pedagogical Center, indirect ceiling lighting is used here as well – this time in the form of a surface-mounted H-profile luminaire. This luminaire is equipped with an upward-facing NauticProfil® Nova-5 LED strip with an asymmetrical linear lens. Various LED light inserts provide downward-facing illumination in key areas such as the stairwells.
The designers also used linear lighting to highlight the steel structure in the roof area. The star-shaped arrangement and the clearly defined, continuous white lines of light create a captivating ceiling effect in the evening.
