Campus on the Dällt

The basic idea of the new school campus “An der Dällt” in the municipality of Schuttrange in Munsbach is to network the areas of school, sport and culture with public life in the municipality.

The individual buildings are grouped around a spacious public square, which forms the center of the campus and creates the connection between the school area and the public area. It is a meeting place, a place to stay and a cross-generational focal point for the people in the community. The architectural team a+a Bertrand Schmit and iPlan by Marc Gubbini Architectes was awarded first prize for the design after an international competition and was commissioned to carry out the work.

Art installations underline and complement the architectural concept. The glass elevator in the cultural center was artistically treated by local artist Stephanie Loewenstein under the title “at times”. The projection of alienated architectural photography onto the glass of the elevator shaft shows the layering of structures in play with light. The different reflections on the moving elevator and the changing colored lighting abstract light, space and time.

The evening accent lighting of the buildings, which highlights their form, also follows an artistic concept by Flashaar Ingenieure GmbH from Bingen am Rhein. Various lighting scenarios are programmed and can illuminate the campus in a variety of ways, depending on the occasion or event. The benches designed specifically for the square also serve this purpose; they rest simply on a slender base on the side. Integrated lights cast long, colored stripes of light across the square in the evening.

Sustainable architecture with an efficient low-energy concept was a matter of course for the Climate Alliance community of Schuttrange. This concept with other innovative approaches was supported by the Ministry of the Environment with public funds.
The primary energy requirement of the new school buildings is 40% lower than the consumption of comparable conventional buildings. Heat losses are minimized by optimizing the building envelope and using intelligent technologies and high-quality materials (e.g. for glazing and thermal insulation).

The exemplary use of resources and the intelligent use of innovative technologies make an active contribution to global environmental protection and to saving operating costs for the municipality of Schuttrange.
