Elbphilharmonie Hamburg

Visible from afar and with its striking silhouette, the Elbphilharmonie is a Hamburg landmark – even before its official opening on January 11, 2017. The outstanding architecture is underscored by a lighting concept by renowned lighting designer Ulrike Brandi, also from Hamburg. It utilizes simple optical principles and perfectly showcases the architecture without placing itself in the foreground. This ensures that the viewer maintains a connection between inside and outside from all perspectives – the sky, water, and the cityscape should be tangible and not overshadowed.
In the Great Hall, the lighting designer's goal was also to emphasize the grandeur of the space. Over 800 FLASHAAR NauticProfil luminaires were integrated into the hall's steps, highlighting the terraced tiers. As part of the emergency lighting, they can also be seen during productions, providing orientation and safety.
The central acoustic reflector is also illuminated with FLASHAAR . The custom luminaires based on the FLASHAAR HighPowerProfil were installed all around the top and illuminate the vault. The acoustic reflector thus stands out against the bright ceiling and becomes a defining element of the space.
72 modified FLASHAAR Solaris spotlights highlight the concert hall's unique organ. They illuminate the 4,765 pipes, some of which are mounted in the room where they can be touched or are visible behind a perforated wall. As the centerpiece of the Great Hall, the organ is accessible to all visitors and, at the same time, perfectly integrated into the concert hall's architecture.
In addition to these central lighting elements in the Great Hall, FLASHAAR NauticProfil light lines were also used for the functional and elegant lighting of the concert ticket offices on the ground floor of the Elbphilharmonie. FLASHAAR
has been involved in the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg project since 2007, when the newly founded company participated in the tender for the luminaires. The opening, in the company's 10th anniversary year, gives FLASHAAR two reasons to celebrate.
